Abstract Types and Submission Fees

Submission fees are administrative fees and are not meant to be punitive in nature. Submission fees are NOT refundable for any reason. For questions about abstract types, please contact Sara Fleming at [email protected].


Acceptance Criteria

  • Abstract submitted in English, including tables/charts and figures
  • Relevance and uniqueness of the study or presentation to the field of nutrition therapy and metabolic support
  • Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts that: address unique or emerging nutritional issues; contribute new information to the field; show strong applicability to or improvement of nutrition therapy practice or metabolic support
  • Clarity of the introduction, hypothesis, or purpose for the study or presentation
  • Quality of the research design and methodology
  • If relevant, the hypothesis is clearly stated
  • Methods are clear and appropriate
  • Sufficient sample size to validate conclusions
  • Investigators took measures to control for threats to validity and reliability
  • Validity and sufficiency of the data
  • Enough data or findings to form conclusions
  • If relevant, statistical analysis of the data is appropriate
  • Study was completed
  • Relevance of the conclusions to the data
  • Case studies and vignettes are exempt from the requirement for extensive data; however, must be unique, providing learning points or unusual clinical presentations
  • Abstract carefully reviewed for spelling, grammar and formatting
  • Abstract is free of promotional material, and it is not commercial in nature
  • Brand names for products or services are not mentioned in the title, but may be mentioned once in the methodology section

Review Process
The ASPEN Abstract Review Committee conducts a rigorous peer review of all abstracts submitted. There will be no reconsideration of non-accepted abstracts. Abstracts that are accepted will be selected for poster presentations or oral presentations, and may additionally be selected for poster presentations at the Research Workshop. Accepted abstracts will also be considered for research awards as applicable. There are no submission fee refunds if the abstract is not accepted.

Original Abstract Research Awards
Investigators who submit abstracts to the ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Conference during the regular submission period are eligible to apply for several prestigious abstract awards. Please confirm your eligibility for awards using the submission guidelines document above.

Harry M. Vars and Promising Investigator Awards: Honor early-career investigators with the best research presentations.

Research Trainee Awards: Honor investigators still in training who have submitted top-scoring abstracts.


Best of ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Abstracts:
Awarded to the top-scoring abstracts in each of the primary categories presented at the conference.

  • Malnutrition, Obesity, Nutrition Practice Concepts and Issues
  • Critical Care and Critical Health Issues
  • GI and Other Nutrition and Metabolic Related Topics

Abstract of Distinction: Honor first authors of top-scoring abstracts.

International Abstract Research Awards

Once on the page:
  1. On the conference abstracts page, you should see a header of "ASPEN Abstracts by Year". From here you can scroll down and click on the blue, linked conference/abstract year you would like to view. This will take you directly to the journal volume including the published abstracts as "Supporting Information"
  2. On the linked abstract page, scroll down to the blue “Supporting Information” section to check for additional abstract files by clicking on the down arrow.
  3. Once you have identified the file, click on the filename and the file should open.
  4. From there you may download and save the file to your personal electronic device.

*Student Abstract: Please select the student abstract type if the presenting author of the abstract is a student at the time of abstract submission. ASPEN identifies a student as an individual who is a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, as defined by the individual’s institution. Trainees, those in an internship, residency, post-doctoral or other fellowship program are NOT considered students and must submit a non-student abstract. Any individual who submits a student abstract and is found to be ineligible given the student criteria will have their abstract withdrawn without a refund of the submission fee. 

**Non-student Abstract: Please select the non-student abstract type if the presenting author of the abstract is not a student at the time of abstract submission.
