Each year, ASPEN's Sections host one-of-a-kind meetings to explore the special interests of their group and to provide invaluable learning and networking opportunities. We invite you to participate in one or more of the Community Forums scheduled during this year's conference.

Neonatal Section (NEW!)

Join the brand new Neonatal Section of ASPEN for our inaugural event! The Section meeting will be an informal session with discussion topics and invited abstract presenters. The Section will use this time to encourage open discussion, networking, learning, and will gather information about areas of focus for this group in the year ahead. Sabrina Bierman will also be recognized as the New Practitioner Award winner. 

Lunch is generously provided by Mead Johnson and will be served from 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM. The Neonatal Section Community Forum will kick off at 12:45 PM immediately following lunch.

Dietetics Practice Section

Join us for a night of learning with CE credit available for dietitians. The presentation, Factors affecting the metabolic rate of the critically ill, mechanically vented patients: Implication for predicting the rate, will be followed by a discussion led by our panel of experts.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

  1. To put the ASPEN prediction standards for energy expenditure in context with other prediction methods. 
  2. To describe energy expenditure in the critically ill at the extremes of age and body mass index. 
  3. To describe the effects of sedation and feeding on energy expenditure in the critically ill patient.

Nutrition Support Nurses Practice Section

The Section will come together at the Community Forum for a short update on Nursing Section activities and engagement with the ASPEN community to include presentations by nurses at the meeting, leadership changes, and opportunities for involvement. This will be followed by roundtable discussions regarding member roles in nutrition support, advantages to membership and certification, support from experienced members for abstract preparation and other scholarly activities involving the ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Conference as well as other venues, initiatives that need member support and contributions of expertise, and suggestions for outreach efforts to recruit new members.

Pharmacy Practice Section

The Pharmacy Practice Section will honor pharmacists who have received recognition by ASPEN during the ASPEN 2018 Nutrition Science & Practice Conference and update the membership on various nutrition pharmacy initiatives and ongoing specialization certification. Our new practitioner awardee, Whitney Holmes, will be presenting on her nutrition research. Please join us for this informational and networking forum.    


Medical Practice Section

Join physicians for a unique Medical Practice Section. Drs. Steve McClave and Molly McMahon will lead a panel of national and international physician leaders discussing hot topics. Topics will include pushing protein, fecal transplant during critical care, nutritional risk: is it a valid concept? and hospital-based PN controversies. We will discuss a Board-approved strategy to increase physician engagement in ASPEN. Time for networking will be included.

Student Section (NEW!)

Join ASPEN’s Student Leaders for their inaugural Student Section Community Forum! The Student Section program will focus on launching and advertising the new Student Section as well as developing ideas and goals for 2018. There will be an introduction to the Section Leadership followed by round-table discussions to allow for brainstorming, networking, and planning for 2018, and recognition of our New Practitioner Award winner, Zil Patel. Members of ASPEN’s New Practitioners’ Working Group will be in attendance to help facilitate the roundtable discussions.

International Clinical Nutrition Section

Our annual event will highlight award winners, focus on progress and planning for Section initiatives such as the Clinical Nutrition Metrology Survey, PN Pharmacists Initiative, Section communications, and educational priorities for the year ahead. We look forward to the contributions of international attendees to help inform the work of the Section.

Critical Care Section

Drug Nutrient Interaction Section

Our program, the Nutrition Support Feud, is an educational tool to collect information on trends in practice, improve understanding, and correct errors. The program combines these elements in a game show format, and derives its answers from a survey that was distributed amongst targeted health care professionals. Two teams of contestants, attempt to guess at which answers to the surveys were the most common.   

LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

  1. Upon conclusion, the participant will know the indications for early parenteral nutrition in critical care 
  2. The participant will be familiar with the criteria for determining parenteral nutrition compatibility 
  3. The participant will be familiar with signs and symptoms of pediatric nutrition deficiencies

Pediatric Section

Join the Pediatric Section for a round table session around the topic of lipids in pediatrics. The Section will explore getting lipids on the formulary, dispensing lipids, and different patient populations it benefits and why. There will also be a brief presentation on the Canadian experience with specific lipids in pediatrics.
