DESCRIPTION
The etiology and manifestation of malnutrition across the patient care spectrum varies and is multifactorial. This program explores microbiome influencers, including malnutrition and select medical management practices. Highlights encompass current understanding of food insecurity, fiber supplementation, diagnostic imaging and preoperative nutrition optimization. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Discuss aspects of the following relationships with the microbiome: malnutrition, food insecurity, obesity, fiber supplementation and opioid usage.
  2. Identify methods of diagnosing malnutrition in the intensive care unit and beyond.
  3. Describe a preoperative nutrition optimization program proactively providing evidence-based interventions, based on malnutrition risk stratification.
