Fluids, Electrolytes, and Acid-Base Webinar Series: Part 4: Complex Case Management

May 23, 2019,  4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Event Type: Webinars

Nutrition support clinicians perform a critical role in the identification and management of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base abnormalities in patients requiring specialized nutrition support. A comprehensive understanding of these disorders is critical for optimizing management of enteral and/or parenteral nutrition, as well as intravenous fluids. This four-part webinar series is intended for dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, or allied health professionals desiring to learn a systematic approach to fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders. The overall objective of this series is to provide clinicians with the knowledge to accurately assess adult, pediatric, or neonatal patients given varying patient case scenarios. In this final session, we will focus on complex case management of nutrition support patients with short bowel syndrome, refeeding syndrome, and drug-induced electrolyte abnormalities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Devise a strategy to meet the fluid and electrolyte needs of a short bowel syndrome patient based upon their gastrointestinal losses.
  2. Manage the most common drug-induced electrolyte disorders in patients receiving specialized nutrition support.
  3. Formulate a treatment plan in a patient at risk for refeeding during the first week of specialized nutrition support.
