Nutrition Support Patient Data

ASPEN is working to gather U.S. data on numbers of nutrition support patients in a variety of settings. These numbers are vital to explaining the nutrition support field and need for services and personnel. These patient data are current as of November 2015. 

Malnutrition

Acute Care Inpatient Enteral Patients

AHRQ Healthcare Costs and Utilization Project (HCUP) Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS)
2013 data: Total of 35,597,792 discharges from short stay hospitals. Those that received EN Infusion (ICD-9 procedure code 96.6)= 255,110 or 0.72% of discharges (22.6% were pediatric, 44.3% were older adults)

Acute Care Inpatient Parenteral Patients:

2013 data: Total of 35,597,792 discharges from short stay hospitals. Those that received Parenteral Nutrition Infusion (ICD-9 Procedure Code 99.15)= 302,250 or 0.85% of discharges (40.5% were pediatric, 29.7% were older adults)

Home Care Enteral Nutrition Patients:
