New and Upcoming A.S.P.E.N. Clinical Guidelines

In the January 2010 issue of the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (JPEN), you'll find the latest clinical guidelines, Nutrition Support of Hospitalized Pediatric Patients with Obesity by Jesuit C, Dillon C, Compher C, A.S.P.E.N. Board of Directors, and Lenders CM. These are also available on the A.S.P.E.N. website (free login required).

The Pediatric ECMO and Adult Renal guidelines were recently approved by the Board of Directors and will be published in JPEN in 2010. A series of Neonatal Guidelines and Adult Nutrition Screening are also forthcoming in 2010.

The updated revision of the A.S.P.E.N. Adult Hospitalized Patient Standards has been reviewed by A.S.P.E.N. and external expert reviewers. Thanks to all of you who offered comments on these standards. This document was last published in 2002; the new version will be published later this year in Nutrition in Clinical Practice (NCP).
Nutrition Support Teams Paper Published
A.S.P.E.N.'s paper on Nutrition Support Team paper has been published in the February issue of NCP. Developed by our Practice Management Task Force, this paper evaluates the state of nutrition support practice and the utility of Nutrition Support Teams (NSTs) in clinical practice. The task force developed a survey to assess the interdisciplinary scope of practice related to nutrition support therapy, successful team models, and reimbursement. Upon analysis of results from an A.S.P.E.N. membership survey conducted in 2008 and review of the literature on this subject, the task force developed strategic recommendations for the establishment, function, and management of a NST in a variety of different "team" models and healthcare settings.
Free Be A.W.A.R.E. Medication Safety Poster Now Available
As part of A.S.P.E.N.'s ongoing efforts to improve enteral safety and translate our Enteral Nutrition Practice Recommendations to the bedside, we are excited to announce the launch of the Be A.W.A.R.E. (2010) poster campaign. This A.S.P.E.N. safetey campaign, sponsored by Nestle HealthCare Nutrition, focuses on Medication Safety through Enteral Feeding Tubes. It is designed to educate nurses to help prevent enteral misconnections and improve enteral nutrition safety.

Be A.W.A.R.E. is the newest phase of this EN safety initiative; last year we introduced the Be A.L.E.R.T. component. Free Be A.L.E.R.T. and Be A.W.A.R.E. posters are available for display at nursing stations and other prominent places in your hospital. Please share these with your coworkers and encourage safe enteral nutrition delivery. You can obtain the posters in the following ways:
