Introduction

Welcome to A.S.P.E.N.'s Research Highlights. A.S.P.E.N. is working hard to achieve our strategic goal of increasing support, appreciation, and dissemination of nutrition and metabolic research.  This is clearly evident when viewing our plans for Clinical Nutrition Week 2010, where you'll see basic science and clinical research integrated into the educational programs. Information on research abstracts, grants, awards, funding opportunities and research programming at CNW can be found in this newsletter. Please feel free to send us your news, questions and suggestions so that we can better serve your research needs.

Research at CNW 2010
This year the abstract review committees received more than 260 abstracts (Scientific and Nutrition Practice) to review. Our thanks to the committees for their careful selection; the selected abstracts can be found on the CNW website. Highly ranked abstracts have been woven into the CNW 2010 program and the Abstracts of Distinction are noted in the abstracts listing. Please review and print the abstracts you wish to further study. Join your colleagues for the general symposia, Premier Paper session where the Vars Award will be selected, the other scientific paper sessions, the Poster Professor session, and the Nutrition Practice Poster session. Times and abstract titles can be found in the Program Guide at CNW.
Meet the Mentor Session
The A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads Research Foundation will again host the Meet a Research Mentor session at Clinical Nutrition Week. This program offers emerging investigators the opportunity to connect with senior researchers in an informal roundtable atmosphere.  At least 10 highly successful researchers, including NIH staff, will share information with new researchers on February 11 in Las Vegas.

2010 A.S.P.E.N. Research Award Winners

A.S.P.E.N.'s research awards program is an important component of our strategic efforts to engage nutrition scientists across the career continuum.  Since 1982, A.S.P.E.N. has promoted excellence in research by supporting members through our research awards program. We are proud to present several awards today, recognizing promising investigators in the fields of nutrition support and clinical nutrition and metabolism.

Promising Investigator Awards

are given to the primary authors of the highest ranking abstracts accepted for presentation at Clinical Nutrition Week 2010. Researchers who are still in training or are in the early stages of their professional careers are eligible for this award. The winners receive a travel grant to attend Clinical Nutrition Week to present their work at the Premier Paper Session. This year the recipients of the promising investigator award along with the Vars Award will be announced onsite in Las Vegas. The Harry M. Vars Research Award serves as a tribute to Dr. Vars and his seminal contributions to the development of total parenteral nutrition.  Dr. Vars' work exploring the role of intravenous nutrition in wound healing was an important catalyst in the development of parenteral nutrition. This award honors Dr. Vars as a true pioneer in the field and is presented to an investigator for the best paper presented at Clinical Nutrition Week.  This paper and those of all of the other Vars award candidates will be published in an upcoming issue of JPEN.

The Stanley Dudrick Research Scholar Award honors Dr. Dudrick for his pioneering research leading to the landmark development of total parenteral nutrition. The award is presented to an investigator for outstanding research accomplishments in the field of nutrition support and the potential to continue to make significant contributions. A.S.P.E.N. is honored to have Dr. Stanley Dudrick chair the committee that selects the Dudrick award recipient. The 2010 Dudrick Award recipient is Dr. Thomas Jaksic, the W. Hardy Hendren Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School and Vice-Chairman Pediatric Surgery Children's Hospital Boston. In 1999 he help found the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation Program (CAIR) at Children's Hospital Boston and continues to serve as its surgical director. He has been a long time A.S.P.E.N. member and has served the organization in many research roles and is currently serving on the Board of Directors.

2010 Research Workshop
Register today for the 2010 Research Workshop-Intestinal Failure: Latest Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment, Including Transplantation, February 7-8, Las Vegas Hilton.  Stay on top of the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal failure by attending this high-powered, collaborative research workshop. A luncheon promoting research consortia will be included. For full program details and discussion topics click here

2009 Research Workshop Published as Gastroenterology Supplement
Proceedings from the A.S.P.E.N. 2009 Research Workshop,  Micronutrients in Parenteral Nutrition: Too Little or Too Much?   were recently published in a Gastroenterology supplement.  The course directors were  Drs. Lyn Howard and Alan Buchman. Dr. Kelly Tappenden, A.S.P.E.N. past president, served as guest editor. This supplement is available via open access in Gastroenterology Volume 137, Issue 5, Supplement, Pages 1-134 (November 2009). (HTML) (.PDF)
A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads Research Foundation Grant Winners

The A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads Research Foundation was established in 1992 to provide support in the form of grants for research conducted by promising investigators, thereby assisting in the establishment of their careers. Consistent with Dr. Rhoads' mentoring nature, our foundation, named in his honor, continues to impact scientists striving to test a wide range of hypotheses related to nutrition support.  Indeed, several recipients of Rhoads Research Foundation grants have gone on to develop successful research programs funded by federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health.  The Foundation provides a springboard for emerging researchers who could potentially discover the next great advancement in our field. The Foundation exists to foster training and mentorship in nutrition and metabolic research and to fund research grants to support evidence based practice that results in safe and efficacious care and positive outcomes.  We are proud of the funding that we are able to provide to young investigators, but our goal is to the increase the size of the awards and expand grant support to mentor more emerging investigators, graduate students, and trainees.  Consider giving to the Foundation and supporting the future of nutrition support. For information on donations, visit the website.

The Foundation received an impressive pool of grant applications this year.  Investigators are working hard on innovative approaches to answer our most pressing scientific questions. The Foundation will fund four research projects this year. The decisions have been made but the candidates have not yet been informed of the decisions.
A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads Research Foundation Silent Auction at CNW10
The Foundation Development Committee, chaired by Mary Russell, MS, RD, LDN, CNSD, is seeking your help in making the 1st Annual Foundation Silent Auction a resounding success. The silent auction will be held during the wine and cheese reception at CNW10 on February 8th. You are encouraged to donate an auction item or your time and energy at the reception to support the A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads Research Foundation. The Foundation's mission is to provide support to nutrition researchers by funding research initiatives and mentoring young investigators.  Details on how you can donate may be found on our website.
Rhoads Lecture Anthology: A Great Holiday Gift
This anthology is a classic collection of the annual Rhoads Research lectures published in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (JPEN) throughout the past 30 years. Reflect on the important contributions of Dr. Rhoads and his research contemporaries Levenson: the immune response to sepsis; Cuthbertson: the metabolic response to stress and injury; Moore: scientific validation of body composition; Cahill: glucose metabolism; Munro: protein metabolism; Randall: postoperative enteral feeding and their respective significant additions to nutritional science and clinical care. It is hoped that perusal of this remarkable anthology will provide a memorable and informative commentary on the history and seminal contributions of the "giants" of nutritional science and metabolic care.  A portion of the proceeds from each purchase will be donated to the ARRF.
