Parenteral Nutrition Electrolyte / Mineral Product Shortage Considerations (5-3-2011)
A.S.P.E.N.'s new CPC Shortage Subcommittee has developed "Parenteral Nutrition Electrolyte / Mineral Product Shortage Considerations" in an effort to assist members in coping with the multiple IV electrolyte and mineral drug shortages that currently exist. The document has been approved by the Clinical Practice Committee and the Executive Board of the A.S.P.E.N. Board of Directors. The PN Electrolyte/Mineral Product Shortage Considerations is available in the A.S.P.E.N. Document Library along with other drug shortage consideration papers (e.g., multivitamins, fat emulsions and amino acids).
A.S.P.E.N. continues to work with our partners (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists [ASHP] and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices [ISMP]) in communicating drug shortage issues to the FDA Drug Shortage Program (DSP). The FDA DSP is working very hard to alleviate the drug shortage situation. A.S.P.E.N. members can greatly assist by providing details on their severe drug shortage supply situation directly to the FDA DSP.
