This hands-on and interactive session addresses knowledge gaps for individuals who wish to delve deeper into challenges associated with pediatric nutrition support. Building on foundational knowledge, speakers will present information that provides the scaffolding to expand expertise through the discussion of complex clinical situations. Participants can move among stations covering a variety of topics that will help them create individualized nutrition support plans in challenging circumstances.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Discuss neonatal parenteral nutrition (PN) prescribing in the face of clinical challenges for neonates in the NICU.
  2. Summarize the unique challenges of managing fluids, electrolytes, and nutritional needs in neonates.
  3. Discuss pediatric enteral formulas and their indications for different complex clinical scenarios.
  4. Discuss human milk fortification and commercial high calorie pediatric enteral formulas.
  5. Summarize the benefits and concerns with the various lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs).
  6. Discuss pediatric PN troubleshooting, cycling, and components of standardized commercially available PN products. 
  7. Identify central venous access devices (CVADs) commonly used with PN in pediatric patients.
  8. Identify enteral access devices (EADs) commonly used with enteral nutrition (EN) in pediatric patients. 
  9. Identify common gastrostomy site skin complications and describe management strategies based on clinical evaluation.
  10. Summarize the concepts of intestinal rehabilitation and the various methods used to facilitate reaching intestinal autonomy.
  11. Identify the components of a nutrition focused physical exam (NFPE). 
  12. Describe methods to obtain accurate and focused nutritional assessment in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and motor impairments.
  13. Discuss the safety of the clinical practice of nutrition support prescribing and ensure nutrition support ordering practices meet all federal, state, and local standards.
