Gastroparesis (GP) is a delay in gastric emptying for greater than 3 months in a patient without mechanical or functional obstruction. In those with diabetes mellitus, glycemic control can become very difficult, aggravating GP. The prevalence of GP is increasing in part due to the increase in new cases of DM, as well as the sheer number of surgeries altering the vagus nerve (fundoplication, Bilroth I& II, gastric bypass surgery, heart-lung transplants, pancreatoduodenectomy, etc). Symptoms of GP significantly threaten not only nutrition and hydration status, but also devastate overall quality of life. This webinar will provide the clinician with practical strategies to improve the nutritional care of the patient with GP including nutritional assessment, oral diet intervention, and finally, enteral and parenteral nutrition support.
- Identify patients at risk for gastroparesis.
- Recognize medications that may aggravate symptoms of gastroparesis.
- Devise nutritional treatment plan for the patient with gastroparesis.
