A.S.P.E.N. Public Policy and Advocacy

US Capitol

The goal for the A.S.P.E.N. Public Policy and Advocacy program is to advocate on behalf of the field of nutrition support to improve clinician experience and patient outcomes. Our strategic objectives include addressing healthcare and regulatory issues affecting members and patients and participating in healthcare policy initiatives to promote optimal nutrition support. A.S.P.E.N.’s scope includes high priority issues pertaining to nutrition support, including working in coalition with other like-minded organizations, as appropriate. Our advocacy objectives include working with the U.S. Congress, the Executive Branch (HHS, NIH, regulatory agencies, CMS, AHRQ), public/private groups and the courts (amicus briefs).

Specific Program Objectives:

  • Improve the quality and safety of all patients/consumers receiving nutrition support;
  • Advocate for fair reimbursement to ensure that beneficiaries of government funded health programs receive the highest quality nutrition support care;
  • Sponsor the concept of a fair marketplace that does not jeopardize the provision of safe and quality nutrition support; and
  • Promote continued federal funding for nutrition and metabolic research and training and dissemination of same.
