Dr. McClain is a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Medicine at the University of Louisville and Chief of Gastroenterology at the Louisville Veterans Administration Medical Center. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis, after which he completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Minnesota. After serving on the faculty at the University of Minnesota and the Veterans Administration Medical Center for 7 years, Dr. McClain moved to the University of Kentucky in 1982 where he was Director of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition as well as Professor of Nutrition and Toxicology. He also was Director of the NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center there from 1991 to 2000. He has served on numerous NIH and Veterans Administration Study Section Review Boards, as well as numerous journal editorial boards. He has over 25 years of continuous federal funding including a current NIH Merit Award, and he has over 200 publications. His research interests are in mechanisms of cytokine-induced cell injury in liver disease, cytokine and nutrient interactions, mineral metabolism, and complementary and alternative medicine. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, as well as holding certification in Nutrition. He has served in a variety of posts at the American College of Nutrition, including President in 1996. He has received numerous awards, including the Grace A. Goldsmith Award for outstanding research in the area of nutrition. He joined the faculty at the University of Louisville in 2000 as the University Distinguished Chair in Hepatology.
